Student Spotlight: Meet Nuha!
“The memory of seeing my husband and son murdered in cold blood is still fresh in my mind. It happened way back in 2003, in my country, Iraq. My name is Nuha and I am left with one son. We fled to Syria and spent two and a half years there. Our papers were arranged by the government and then we were flown to America.
My son attended a college here in the US and earned his degree which enables him to provide for all of our needs. As for me, I just stayed at home cooking and cleaning. One day, my son told me that I should get ready to go to school, which I vehemently refused. I told him, “I am very old and can’t speak English” but he insisted I had to go and learn how to speak.
I eventually agreed to start classes. Right now, I can speak and write English in my own little way. I thank Wayne Township Adult Education for helping me. My teachers are so good and patient with me. The school accepted me and showed me love and affection, helping me to heal my broken heart.”
